Background of the Study
Mentorship has long been recognized as a valuable educational tool in nursing education, serving to guide and support students through their academic journey. In the context of the University of Calabar College of Nursing, mentorship programs are designed to facilitate the development of nursing students both academically and professionally. These programs typically pair students with experienced nurses, faculty members, or senior students, who provide guidance on both academic and clinical matters. Research indicates that mentorship can enhance students' academic success by fostering personal growth, boosting self-confidence, and providing emotional and professional support (Kenny et al., 2024).
Nursing students often face challenges balancing academic demands with clinical placements, which require practical skills and emotional resilience. Mentorship offers a unique opportunity for students to learn from the experiences of others, gain valuable insights into their professional development, and receive tailored advice that may not be available in formal educational settings. Effective mentorship programs have been shown to improve academic performance by enhancing students’ problem-solving skills, providing career guidance, and reducing stress related to clinical training (Jones & McDonald, 2023).
Despite the known benefits, the specific impact of mentorship on the academic success of nursing students at the University of Calabar College of Nursing remains largely unexplored. Understanding how mentorship influences students’ academic achievements, their motivation, and overall sense of well-being is essential to improving the structure and implementation of mentorship programs in nursing schools.
This study aims to investigate the impact of mentorship on the academic success of nursing students at the University of Calabar College of Nursing, focusing on how mentorship influences students’ academic performance, personal development, and clinical preparedness.
Statement of the Problem
The role of mentorship in nursing education is widely recognized as an important factor influencing student success. However, despite its potential, the impact of mentorship on the academic success of nursing students at the University of Calabar College of Nursing has not been thoroughly investigated. Mentorship can help students navigate the demanding aspects of nursing education, particularly in overcoming challenges related to clinical placements, academic workload, and emotional stress. Despite the presence of mentorship programs at the institution, there is a lack of empirical research examining the effectiveness and impact of these programs on students’ academic achievements.
Students in nursing programs are often under significant pressure to excel academically while simultaneously meeting the practical demands of clinical training. While mentorship programs may provide support, it is unclear how effectively they contribute to the students' academic success. Mentors can help students by providing guidance in their studies, offering emotional support, and preparing them for professional nursing practice. However, the structure, quality, and scope of mentorship programs can vary, and their direct impact on academic performance needs further exploration.
This study seeks to fill this gap by investigating how mentorship influences the academic success of nursing students at the University of Calabar College of Nursing and identifying key factors that enhance or limit the effectiveness of these programs.
